The primary function of the
VLBI2010 Committee (V2C)
is to
promote and guide research into the improvement of the "technique" of geodetic VLBI. The
committee takes an integrated view of VLBI and evaluates the effectiveness of proposed system
changes based on the degree to which they improve IVSs final products. In addition, the
committee takes responsibility for encouraging the implementation of the recommendations
of
WG3
. Please find more information on the
V2C homepage
.
Given the anticipated participation group, this working meeting will be focused on a review
of the current status of the simulation work, VLBI2010 scheduling, and atmosphere modeling.
In particular, the following activity areas will be discussed:
-
Comparison of Calc/Solve piece-wise linear with OCCAM Kalman filter
-
Impact of antenna slew rate
-
Impact of scheduling strategies
-
Impact of new analytic approaches for handling the atmosphere
-
How close are we to the 1 mm accuracy target?
Further, it is anticipated to brainstorm on two vital questions/topics:
-
What work is still required to finalize the antenna slew rate specifications?
-
What can be done to achieve the 1 mm position accuracy target set out in the WG3 report?
The best realistic simulations (including realistic atmospheres and clocks, but not systematic
errors like drifts of the electronics or antenna deformations) to date indicate that accuracy
in the range 1.2 to 3.5 mm is achievable.
Although other topics relating to improvement of VLBI results will be considered for this meeting,
they will only be included if time permits.
The format of the meeting will be similar to that of the First VLBI2010 Working Meeting. A
number of short informal presentations will be made. These are not intended to be polished
final reports, but simply works in progress. They will be used as a stimulous for discussion.
The presenter will then moderate discussion on that topic.
The time for each presentation and discussion will be flexible so that the depth of treatment
can reflect interest and perhaps the diversity of views.
Prior to the meeting it is expected that written summaries of the work to be presented will
be distributed so that attendees can be better prepared with questions, comments and ideas
for the following discussion.
There are
12 participants
registered for this meeting.
Please notify
Dirk Behrend
if you
detect an error in the
list of participants
or would like to be added to the list.
The agenda is being worked on and will depend on who will attend the meeting. It is planned
to start the workshop at 9:30 a.m. with a morning coffee (and pastries) to allow
participants arriving that morning to make the journey from the airport or train station to
the meeting place. The first session will start around 10 a.m. For lunch, we intend
to go the student's cantine ("Mensa"). The close of the working meeting is foreseen
to be around 5 p.m.
The Third VLBI2010 Working Meeting will be held the Friday before the
Sixth International
e-VLBI Workshop
at the
Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformation
of the University of Bonn. To get to the venue, please follow the
directions
as provided by Axel Nothnagel for the Directing Board meeting. If you
fly into Cologne/Bonn airport you can use the
Airport
Express Bus (Flughafenbus)
from the airport to the main train station. There is no
registration fee for the meeting.
